Miss Rumphius Award Winners
(Description from web site)

The Miss Rumphius Award is presented by members of the RTEACHER listserv to educators who develop and share exceptional Internet resources for literacy and learning. It honors teachers who make our world a more beautiful place, like the title character in the book Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney. Because Miss Rumphius scattered lupine seeds wherever she went, we use this flower as the symbol for our award. We thank Barbara Cooney for granting permission to use this name in our award!

Ms. Appleberry
This website is geared towards kindergarten in the hopes of being a valuable and useful resource for students, parents, and teachers. On this website, students can find online games to play to reinforce concepts they are learning in class. Teachers can find a few useful websites that have an abundance of activities to use in the classroom.

Ms. Anglin
My continuously revised website is for a Junior Girl Scout Troop. Several of the pages are password protected for members only for the scouts’ protection per G.S. Council policy. As in my former and future classrooms, I am devoted to the Whole Language philosophy & my site reflects multiple approaches. Eventually, the girls will assume the responsibility of maintaining the site for as long as we are a Troop. We welcome your feedback. Happy trails!

Ms. Boito
This web site is intended for use with my future fourth grade classes. I want to create an environment where students and parents can share ideas and work together. When I have a class, students will be sharing ideas about their writing and the books/stories they are reading. Drop on by and see what we're up to.

Ms. Burgess
Hi, my name is Melissa Burgess and I am a home schooling mom of four. I also teach Developmental Studies in Reading at a local community college. My decision to create this webpage was twofold; first, I wanted a space where my own children could go and connect to an all-in-one website that contained all of their favorite activities and learning websites, and secondly, to provide a learning community (similar to WebCT and Blackboard) where other home schooling parents and students could peruse useful grade-level information and communicate. This website is not limited to homeschoolers, however.  Anyone and everyone who is interested in having a resource for literacy skills/learning is welcome to use my website.

Ms. Cerven
This site is for my first-grade students and their parents. I provide pages for Parents, Photo Gallery, Language Arts, Math, Student Work, Meet the Teacher, and Helpful Links. Come and see what first graders can do. Please visit us often.

Ms. Dalton
This site is to support 8th and 9th grade English class, offer information for parents and resources for educators. It is a place for my students to create journal entries, submit sample work, and find links to help with their homework. I continuously add new information so check back often!

This site is designed for parents of Kindergartners and first graders. It includes ideas about how to help children with literacy skills at home as well as literature- and theme-based suggestions for read-alouds. There are also links to game sites that help build early literacy skills in a fun way.

Ms. Henson
My classroom website has been designed for parents, students, and fellow teachers. My site addresses my goals and instructional approaches for literacy, as well as other curricular areas. This site also includes information about myself, our class procedures, helpful links, and much more.

Ms. Knox
My site is intended to be useful to teachers, parents and students by providing literacy links, information about the developmental stages of reading and writing, book suggestions, and showcasing celebrations of school reading events.

Ms. Lee
I created this website with the intention to apply it into my high school ESL learners back in Taiwan. Some grammar exercised are especially added for these specific students. But most of my designs are related to literature study since my major concern is to teach literature. I also put one page of digital languge experience project on this site so that my ESL students may benefit. I am aware that there is so much room for improvement, so any suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

Ms. Li
Creating this web site is my first try to integrate technology into teaching the English language to my students back in China. I want to inform language learners at different levels of a helpful means to enable them to better approach the English language. I hope this web site that combines visual graphics and audio effect could shed light on learning of a second language. The other purpose of designing such a site is to strengthen the equal significance of reading and writing activities to language learners. The WebQuest included in the site exemplified the intention of practice reading and writing in English.

I use a balanced approach to literacy in my second grade classroom, but I do spend much time on the basal/skills approach and have focused on this for my site.

Ms. Matthews
This web site was designed to focus on literacy instruction in the 5th grade. I wanted to offer students the opportunity to interact with the novels we read in class. I also wanted a place where parents could find information about 5th grade and offer them a way to help their children. This will be a continuous work in progress. I will adjust it to fit the novels the students read. I will also offer weekly updates on spelling words and newsletters.

I designed my web site to support my literacy approach in the classroom. While I use a variety of approaches, my main focus is with the basal/skills literacy approach. My web site includes vocabulary lists, sight words, book lists, and online activities and resources. It is a continuing work in progress.

Ms. Pickardt
This Website was created for Ms. Pickardt by Dawn Castagno-Dysart as a resource for fifth grade students to use at home. Included are links to kid friendly search engines. This allows students to research topics, in a safe way, not only at school but at home. This site is easy for children to navigate and Ms. Pickardt’s class enjoys playing the games that compliment what they are learning.  Next year we hope to add a blog and student work, so please check back.

Ms. Smith
My web site was created to be used in my tutoring business. While I use some skills practice with students, my main instructional approach to literacy is literature based. I have designed my site around my approaches. I provide educational links and resources for not only me to use with my students, but for parents to use with their children, as well. There is a page full of booklists arranged by grade level and links to various authors' web sites. There is also a message board for me to communicate with parents and students. I am currently working with an ESL student, so I felt it was necessary to provide links for ESL resources which the student and his parents might find helpful. Because I feel strongly about the issue of children's safety while surfing the internet, I have included child-friendly search engines and links which discuss Internet safety. Please check out my site.
